Hello,
I have been a Sea Scout Skipper for 37
years and I have seen the changes of line/rope materials have changed.
There are manila, nylon, dacron, and polyethylene lines.. I have
found most all knots work well in all the materials except polyethylene
lines. We use many knots but, the bowline is used the most.
I have found that the "bowline" will not hold together well
in polyethylene lines. So I have made a slight change in the "bowline"
knot just for polyethylene lines and I call it when teaching the knot the
'Nolan Bowline" as the youth in my Ship named the knot.
This is how the knot is made: As we teach it,
the rabbit comes out of the hole and goes around the tree two times (instead
of once) and then back into the hole, must make the knot firm by pulling
the knot tight and it will not work out of polyethylene lines. Now shake
the line and you will see the difference, the regular "bowline" will work
itself loose. Now try the same shaking with the "Nolan Bowline".
Please, try it and see if it indeed holds better in polyethylene lines.
Would be gald to hear any comments.
